CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — A downward trend is now reversing for fuel prices in Champaign ahead of summer travel.

The average per-gallon cost has risen 3.2 cents in the last week for a total of $3.56/g, GasBuddy said. GasBuddy surveyed 79 gas stations in Champaign, where prices are 4.2 lower than they were last month and 21.1 cents lower than they were last year.

Champaign’s cheapest station offered $3.33/g on Sunday while the most expensive had $3.82/g — an almost 50-cent difference. Statewide, Sunday’s lowest gas price sat at $3.18/g while the highest was $5.29/g.

GasBuddy also gathers data from more than 11 million weekly price reports from more than 150,000 gas stations across the country. Their findings say the national average for diesel prices dropped 3.4 cents since last week for $3.94/g. Meanwhile, gasoline dropped 1 cent per gallon for $3.62/g. That is an increase of 2.7 cents since last month and 11.1 cents since last year.

While prices may be going up in Champaign, Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, said that the overall picture looks promising.

“We’ve seen the national average fade slightly again as oil prices have cooled and our spring peak appears to be more confidently behind us,” he said. “While refinery utilization rates last week indicated that there is still some refinery maintenance work to be done, oil prices have helped put downward pressure on gasoline prices, with oil falling below $80 per barrel last week.”

De Haan also predicted that nationwide gas and diesel demands could stay low through the summer driving season in the wake of a weaker-than-expected jobs report.
