Saudi King Salman outlined his government’s priorities for the coming year, urging citizens to support economic reforms and the government’s anti-corruption drive, AP reported.

In early November, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman oversaw the unprecedented arrest of top princes, businessmen and officials allegedly involved in corruption. Many have agreed to pay undisclosed sums in exchange for their release.

“We are determined to confront corruption fairly and firmly,” the king said before the consultative Shura Council.
He noted that Saudi Arabia will not contradict the principles of its faith as it “moves forward on the path of development and modernization.”

King Salman also noted that  the world’s largest oil exporter will work to enable the private sector to become a partner in the kingdom’s economic diversification drive away from petroleum, Reuters reported.

According to him, the kingdom was pushing ahead with its “Vision 2030” economic reform plan to find new sources of revenue for the OPEC powerhouse. But he said that corruption was one of the main threats to economic development.

“We have decided, with God’s help, to confront it (corruption) with justice and decisiveness so that our country can enjoy the renaissance and development that every citizen aspires for,” he said.

Salman also reiterated Saudi Arabia’s condemnation of President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and move the U.S. embassy to the city.
